Remembering Brugge

Bruges, Brugges, Brugge - there are as many variations on the name as there are languages spoken in this medieval town.

Visiting in late autumn I found a magical place. Bruges is a delight for wandering, for eating, for museums (an exhibition of the Flemish Primitives was showing) – and for chocolate. I was even lucky enough to see the famous Dog of Bruges before he died. The old town is criss-crossed with canals, and cars are few.

The canals remain the heart of the old town, and the waterways offer delightful views of the buildings. All day little tourist barges wind their way around Bruges, helping give a layout to a place which, much like the winding alleys of Venice, left me becoming eternally lost.

And discovering new things. Who knew Bruges had windmills? (Four remain, but there were once twenty-five of them.)

Or a chocolate museum with a replica of a Michelangelo Madonna and Child?

It's also a delightful place to explore the past. This photo brings back the smell of damp leaves after a crisp autumn day.

Thank you.
