Taking a Step to One Side

This is one of my favourite photos I took recently in Japan, and I almost didn't even see it.

I had reached the Fifth Station of Mt Fuji - the highest one can go in a car. Although it was spring the taste of snow lingered in the air, and I stood in awe looking at this most magical of mountains.

I could easily have spent all my time staring at the shy mountain, but I have a habit of following paths. Walking through the reception buildings to the other side, I came across this gorgeous forest, where a torii gate welcomed me to a shrine. Stone seats invited contemplation (even if they proved a bit chilly!); a perfect place for a quiet moment.

And, when I returned, the majesty of Mt Fuji.
